K. from Dresden: Where does the name "Maiksmännels" come from? |
MMM: In German "Männel" stands for little man, a belittlement for man or creature. Like in English star -> starlett. Maiksmännel is a combination made from the first name of the maker plus "little man". You could also say: "Little man made by Maik".

S. from Wiesloch: Where does the ideas for all the Männels come from?
MMM: Mostly the ideas for an new Männel come spontaneously out of everyday situations, personal encounters or holiday trips. For instance the Scottish Guardsman (#14) was created from a black woolen pom-pom that was found in grandmother's old sewing box. Sometimes new ideas come from enquieres of family members, friends or collguages.

M. from Berlin: Why can't I buy a Maiksmännel?
MMM: Dear M, we are pleased to hear that you are interested in the Maiksmännels. Unfortunately it is still not possible to buy Maiksmännels. Please have a look in the section Shop? There you can already find an explanation for that.
T. from San Francisco: Why do the Maiksmännels not have a mouth?
MMM: To be honest: When the first MMs were created that mouth was forgotten. So sorry for that. So they became ventriloquists. And this is quit cool because painting mouths is not easy.
Adriane from Hundeluft (Saxony-Anhalt): What is the original size of a Maiksmännel? |
MMM: A Maiksmännel is between 11 and 13 cm high. The diameter of the head is 3,5 cm. The bookmarks and the key fobs are smaller, about 7 cm.
F. from Waldfischbach-Burgalben: How long does it take to make a Maiksmännel? |
MMM: That varies and depends on the number of accessories and details. A simple one like e.g. No. 20/21 (2009, Ampelmännchen) may be ready in 2 hours. The more accessories and details a Männel has the longer it takes. For instance the civil servant No.139 (2015) needs 8 - 10 hours. Usually the pieces that feature electronics take longer. But the Männel are not made in one go. Between the different work steps it takes time to let try colours or glue.
